Fall In Brownwood Texas

Festival season, a wine-and-beer stroll, a haunted jail and a musical in a 1920s theatre — the short list of what’s worth planning around between now and the holidays.

Fall is when Brownwood stops apologising for the weather. Evenings get usable again, the calendar fills up, and most of what fills it happens within a few blocks of the same downtown square.

Here’s the short list — the things we’d tell a friend to plan a weekend around.

October 3 — Feels Like Home Festival

If you only make one trip this fall, make it this one. Our whole pitch as a town is three words long, and this is the weekend we have to prove it: a downtown given over to music, food and several thousand people who mostly know each other.

Come early, park once, and walk everywhere.

October 16 — Little Shop of Horrors at the Lyric

A man-eating plant, in a beautifully preserved 1920s theatre, two weeks before Halloween. Brownwood’s Lyric Theatre is worth the ticket on an ordinary night; the seasonal timing here is just showing off.

October 24 — Corks & Caps

Texas wine and Texas beer, poured by the people who make it. Central Texas quietly got good at both, and this is the tasting that makes the case in one afternoon.

Trunk or Treat lands the same day, if you’re travelling with kids and would like them to have their own thing.

October 31 — Haunted Jail

The Old Jail does not need a fog machine. Nineteenth-century county lockup, Halloween night, and a building that was already unsettling in daylight. Bring someone you enjoy watching get nervous.

Come hungry. Brownwood has a food scene that feels very much like Brownwood itself: welcoming, unfussy, locally rooted, and with plenty of stories behind the places you’ll find.
