Lake Brownwood: Your Guide to Water, Wildlife & Adventure

Just a short drive from town, Lake Brownwood gives you plenty of ways to get outside—whether your idea of a lake day involves a fishing pole, a kayak, a hiking trail, or simply a shady spot with a good view.

Get Out on the Water

With thousands of acres of water to explore, there’s room for just about every kind of lake day. Bring your boat, paddle a kayak, go swimming, or cast a line from shore or a boat.

Lake Brownwood State Park is an easy place to start, with a boat ramp, fishing pier, swimming and paddling access. Kayaks are also available to rent at the park.

If fishing is your thing, bring your gear. Lake Brownwood is known for largemouth and white bass, crappie and catfish, with plenty of coves and shoreline habitat to explore.

Take the Scenic Route

You don’t have to get in the water to enjoy the lake.

Lake Brownwood State Park has nearly six miles of hiking trails, including the 2.9-mile Nopales Ridge Trail, which is also open to bikes. Along the way, you’ll find lake views, native plants and plenty of opportunities to spot wildlife.

The park also has a little extra history baked into the scenery. Many of its cabins, benches, roads and other structures were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s.

Keep Your Eyes Open

Lake Brownwood is a good place to slow down and look around.

Birdwatchers can keep an eye out for herons, egrets, kingfishers, owls and a variety of seasonal birds. Deer, raccoons, armadillos and other wildlife can also be spotted around the lake and state park.

For an especially peaceful adventure, head to the Pecan Bayou Kayak Trail. The 3–4 mile loop winds through a quiet stretch of the bayou beneath old pecan trees, with abundant bird and wildlife viewing along the way.

Lake Brownwood State Park offers tent camping, RV sites, screened shelters and historic cabins, including accommodations with lake views.

Or make the lake part of a longer getaway with lodging, golf and other amenities around the shoreline.
