Juneteenth (short for June Nineteenth), also known as Freedom Day, is a U.S. holiday that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. It marks the day — June 19, 1865 — when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that all enslaved people were free, more than two years after President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation.

Today, June 19th, 2026, marks the 161st anniversary of the Juneteenth celebration of freedom, which began in Galveston, Texas on June 19th, 1865.
