Stars of Texas Juried Art Exhibit

February 10 - February 23

Each February the Brownwood Civic and Cultural Center hosts the annual Stars of Texas Juried Art Exhibit. This juried exhibit runs for two weeks and culminates with the presentation of $6500 in prizes. The Stars of Texas Juried Art Exhibit was conceived in 1999 in order to showcase the newly restored Santa Fe Depot. A “ground-breaking” committee undertook the task of developing a one-week show, in which mostly local artists participated. Chaired by Ann Jones for its first five years, it developed into a two-week exhibit, and under Roger Levesque’s chairmanship, the exhibit continued to grow from a local show to a truly regional competition. Ruth Wheelis, Chair for the next two years, was able to increase the number of visitors to the exhibit, such that attendance was over 2400 visitors, including 1100 students from the surrounding schools. Donna Lewis, Chair for the next two years, set some very high goals both for artist participation and visitor attendance. Ruth Wheelis has again stepped up to Chair the Thirteenth, Fourteenth, Fifteenth, Sixteenth, Seventeenth, Eighteenth, Nineteenth, Twentieth, and now the Twenty-First Exhibit.
Over the years the Arts Council of Brownwood has been the key driving force in promoting Arts in our community. As a leading sponsor of the Stars of Texas Juried Art Exhibit throughout the years, the Arts Council has played a major role in the success and growth of the Exhibit. We are honored to be asked to serve on the Board of the Arts Council and look forward to assisting the Board in the vital support of a variety of arts in Brownwood. The Arts Council and the Exhibit committee members share the hope that by assisting in the growth of all the arts in Brownwood and our surrounding communities, our citizens will not only be entertained but will also prosper in greater awareness and education of the arts.We were overwhelmed and elated with the exceptional quality of art at the 2018 exhibit. 154 artists from throughout Texas entered a total of 347 pieces of artwork. Our Juror, Randy Bacon, selected 97 artworks for the exhibit. The selected artwork consists of a variety of mediums, subject matter, and exceptional quality that provides a feast for both the eyes and emotions of those attending the exhibit. The Salon des Refusés, sponsored by the Brownwood Art Association, took in a number of pieces of artwork that were not accepted at the Stars Exhibit for display and sale. The Brownwood Art Association Art Center is located at 215 Fisk Ave and will be open to the public each day, February 4th. thru the 17th.
We are expecting the Twenty-First exhibit to be even better and bigger, as each year the quality and number of entries continues to improve and grow.
