Maurine Stewart Art Exhibition at the Brownwood Art Association through May 31st. Maurine Stewart received a Master of Fine Arts degree from UT and a Master of Arts degree from Howard Payne College. She and her husband, Dr. Charles Stewart, were co-founders of the HPU art department. She taught there from the late 1940s through the 1980s. Maurine and Charles hosted the Brownwood Art Association meetings in the HPU art department for a good while. A master teacher, she was very active in local and professional art groups and exhibited her work in many one-person shows. She was best known for her work in oils and pastels, but also excelled in sculpture. Maurine was an incredible portrait painter and gave many portraiture classes and demonstrations. She started the Brownwood Art Association People Painters group, which is still active today. Maurine served as president of the art association in ’51-’52, ’65-’67, and ’76-77. She was chosen as BAA’s Artist of the year in 1987. You will find her paintings in homes and businesses all over town. The gallery is open at 215 Fisk Ave. in downtown Brownwood weekdays 2PM-6PM.
